The popularity of electric vehicles has led to sluggish sales of fuel vehicles in China's domestic market, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported. Mitsubishi Motors previously announced it would halt new vehicle production in China between March and May this year. Now, Mitsubishi Motors plans to extend the shutdown beyond June, which has been confirmed by multiple people, and no date has been set for the resumption of production.

Mitsubishi currently produces mostly SUV models such as the Outlander at a plant in Hunan province, a joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile. However, Mitsubishi's domestic car sales in fiscal 2022 were about 31,800 vehicles, halving from the previous year. Although Mitsubishi launched a new Outlander in China in December, sales have been slower than expected.
Japanese cars are being continuously impacted by new energy vehicles in the domestic market. In addition to Mitsubishi, Mazda's domestic sales fell by nearly half in fiscal 2022, while Nissan's sales fell 27 percent.
Mitsubishi Motors plans to invest 1.4 trillion yen (about 70.56 billion yuan) in electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid vehicle (HV) development and production by the 2030 fiscal year, in response to increasing competition from Chinese and European manufacturers in the sector, IT House previously reported.
