Indonesia's biggest taxi company uses BYD Electric vehicle for 80% of its cars: It's better than Tesla!
Blue Bird, Indonesia's largest taxi operator, plans to convert 80% of its electric vehicles to BYD electric vehicles. The company said it would review orders for Tesla cars because lower-cost models are more popular in Indonesia.
Most of the 500 electric cars delivered to Blue Bird this year have been made by BYD, especially the E6 and T3 models, because they are better suited to the Indonesian market, Blue Bird President Sigit Priawan Djokosoetono said in an interview.
"If Electric vehicle are priced too expensive, we will overcharge our customers, which is not very reasonable, so we need to think about that," he said. "We use a lot of imported BYD models because the price supports our business in Indonesia."
In 2022, BYD Electric vehicle became the world's largest electric vehicle producer with sales of more than 1.85 million units and 18.4 percent market share, more than half a million units more than second-place Tesla.
Byd is now expanding into Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy. On Thursday, BYD signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indonesian government to explore investment potential between China and Indonesia in the electric vehicle sector.
"The signing of this MOU reflects Indonesia's ambition in realising its strategic plan for electric vehicles, as the government aims to develop an electric vehicle ecosystem in order to become the largest electric vehicle market in Southeast Asia," said Luhut Panjaitan, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Coordination.
In addition to the Indonesia deal, BYD is also considering building electric car plants in Indonesia's neighbors, the Philippines or Vietnam.
Blue Bird, on the other hand, is currently evaluating Tesla orders based on ROI. And Tesla may have to cut prices to spur demand in Asia.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk was forced to admit on Twitter that BYD's cars are now competitive.
Musk took to the social media platform in response to a video clip of a past interview with him posted by a user. In the video, a reporter asks Musk how he views BYD's rivalry with Tesla. Musk responded by joking: "Have you seen their cars?" Later, BYD said it had no ability to compete with Tesla.
Now that Musk has seen the video again, his thinking has changed. "That was many years ago and their cars are competitive now," he wrote in response to the tweet.
